MacBook Pro and iMac with next-gen Ivy Bridge processors crop up on benchmarks (update)

Image

Yup, Apples are bound to flow beneath the Ivy Bridge at some point, but how much of a performance boost will they deliver? If you're happy to hold onto a little skepticism, then two unexpected appearances on the Geekbench site could offer some early answers. The first purports to be an unknown 'MacBookPro9,1' laptop powered by an Ivy Bridge Core i7-3820QM running at 2.7GHz, which achieved a benchmark of 12252 -- that's around 17 percent better than a current equivalent Core i7 15-inch or 17-inch MacBook Pro. The second benchmark comes from an 'iMac13,2' running off Intel's next-gen Core i7-3770 desktop chip clocked at 3.4GHz, which only merits a score of 12183 because it's hobbled by 4GB of RAM. If you exclude memory and compare only the CPU integer and floating point scores, then you're looking at a roughly nine percent gain over a current 27-inch iMac with a 3.4Ghz Core i7-2600 processor. Now, these benchmarks could be faked, or represent non-final hardware, but the motherboard codes look valid (see the source links) and they generally tally with what we've come to expect from Ivy Bridge: a healthy oar-stroke forwards, but nothing that would frighten the fish.

Update: 9to5Mac has done some digging and come up with a few more interesting tidbits about the upcoming MacBook Pro refresh. For one, code pulled from the Mountain Lion beta appears to indicate that the Ivy Bridge machines will boast USB 3.0 and a new GPU in the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M. The site also claims that the laptops will be slimmer than the current gen, a rumor that we've been hearing for quite some time now.

Army gets picky, solicits smart feed ammo system for machine guns and auto cannons

War! Huh! What is it good for? Stuff like smart bullet-feeding systems, apparently. See, the US Army isn't quite satisfied with the mixed ammo feed it currently uses with weapons like the helicopter-mounted M230 chain gun. Instead, it wants its machine gunners to be able to freely switch and pick their ammo of choice -- whether it be incendiary rounds or precision-guided smart bullets -- to better match conditions on the field. So the Army is using another weapon in its arsenal -- good, old tax dollars -- to solicit proposals for a smart bullet-feeding system. Initial project goals include near real-time inventorying of ammo, a fire rate of 300 rounds per minute and a selection accuracy rate of 95 percent. Yeah, it's no freaking railgun or tactical laser system. But at least the feeding system can also be used for more peaceful pursuits, like dispensing medical vials or emergency supplies (not via machine gun, of course). In the meantime, folks who want to see a demo of the system's not-so-peaceful applications can check out the video after the break.

Understoodit Lets Students Voice Their Confusion Without Having to Raise Their Hands

Understoodit_logoOver the course of the last few years, more and more "clickers" have found their way into college classrooms. These little devices allow teachers to request real-time feedback from their students through short quizzes and surveys. Toronto-based developer Liam Kaufman, however, thinks that a simpler application that just tells teachers whether their students are confused or not could help improve learning significantly. Students, after all, often hesitate to raise their hands and tell their professors when they aren't able to follow - especially in large lecture classes. With Understoodit, Kaufman hopes to give these students the ability to voice their concerns quietly.

Study shows fewer loans to small business in March

NEW YORK (AP) ? Lending to small business is slowing, possibly a sign of deteriorating confidence in the economy from entrepreneurs.

A study released Tuesday by PayNet, a research firm that tracks loans to small business, shows that lending fell 3 percent in March.

The Thomson Reuters/PayNet Small Business Lending Index was at 98.5 in March, down from a revised 101.8 in February. The index was at 110.5 in December, when companies were rushing to acquire equipment before the expiration of lucrative tax deductions at the end of 2011. PayNet's analysis shows that lending is up 10 percent from a year ago, but it's also at the level where it was in 2005.

Many companies have been hesitant to borrow since the recession because they have been uncertain about the economy.

Sega urinal game 'Toylets' goes on sale to general public, sink companion still missing (video)

Sega Toylets urinal game

In an effort to reduce male patron's messiness (and grab some cash from locales not necessarily associated with gaming) Sega's Toylets can now be found in restrooms across Japan -- and even in a handful of cities overseas. You won't need to make the laborious trek to your nearest bar or arcade to beat the high score any more, however, as Sega's now put the urinal games terminal up for sale to (Japanese) Joe Public. A sensor at the base will detect pressure and, er, volume which acts as the controls. A screen at eye level will show your progress, and you can expect several short-but-sweet games in the style of Rhythm Tengoku or Warioware. It all comes a price though -- you'll need to stump up 140,000 yen (around $1750) for the device itself and 10,000 yen ($125) a piece for games. The porcelain is (unfortunately) not included.

In Milan, more residents answer to Hu than Ferrari

A list of the most common names in Milan revealed the extent to which immigration has changed the character of the business-oriented city.?

For decades the family name of ?Brambilla? has been by far the most common in Milan ? to the point that throughout Italy, where family names were originally strongly associated with geography, people still jokingly refer to Milan folks as ?Mister Brambillas? or ?Sciur Brambilla? (?sciur? being the world for ?Sir??in Milanese dialect).?

So when the local council published a list of the most common names in the city last week, many were surprised to find out that Milan has many more residents known as ?Mister Hu? than ?Mister Brambilla.?

Among the ten most common family names in Milan, three were of Chinese origin, pointing out how ethnically diverse this city in northern Italy has become. On the list, ?Rossi," a name common in Italy but not closely associated with the North, comes first, while Hu, of Chinese origin, is a close second. They are followed by five other typically Italian (but not typical specifically of Milan) names. In eighth is another Chinese name, Chen, while uber-Milanese ?Brambilla? comes only ninth, followed by yet another Chinese name, Zhou.

Think you know Europe? Take our geography quiz.

In the last three decades, a growing numbers of migrants, both from the rest of Italy and from abroad, have settled in Milan, mostly drawn by job prospects in the most business-oriented region of the country. Today one in every five Milan residents is either a foreign national or a descendant of migrant workers.

The Chinese community is one of the oldest in the city, dating back to the first wave of the immigration in the early 1900s. While some other nationalities, particularly from?Eastern Europe and North Africa,?are more numerous, Chinese names are predominant because there is less variety among last names.

?To us this whole comes as no surprise,? Luigi Sun, a representative of Milan's Chinese community of Milan, told the daily newspaper?Republica. ?We have known for a long time Hu is one of the most common names in the city. We have more serous stuff to think about.?

The most common names in Milan:?

  1. Rossi (Italy's most common name)
  2. Hu (Chinese)
  3. Colombo (most common in northern Italy, but not necessarily associated with Milan; the famous explorer Cristoforo Colombo, known in English as Christopher Columbus, was from Genoa)
  4. Ferrari (associated both with central and northern Italy)
  5. Bianchi (another very common name throughout the country)
  6. Russo (a variant of Rossi)
  7. Villa (a typical Milan name)
  8. Chen (Chinese)
  9. Brambilla (once thought to be Milan's most common name)
  10. Zhou (Chinese)

The Wanted Move On From Christina And Take Aim At Britney Spears

'[Britney's] bouncers came down with her and told us to face the wall,' says Siva Kaneswaran.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>If you're having trouble keeping the latest wave of British boy bands straight, just remember this one simple trick: <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wanted_2_/artist.jhtml">The Wanted</a> are the ones who talk tons of smack. </P><P> </P><P>After tearing into <a href="/news/articles/1684009/the-wanted-christina-aguilera.jhtml">"The Voice" coach</a>&#8232; <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/aguilera_christina/artist.jhtml ">Christina Aguilera</a> by calling her a "total bitch" last week, and then <a href="/news/articles/1684084/the-wanted-christina-aguilera-apology.jhtml">kind of apologizing</a>&#8232;, the boys turned their verbal cannons on another ex-Mouseketeer. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:762692/cp~vid%3D762692%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A762692" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>Sitting down for <a href="http://fresh1027.radio.com/2012/04/30/britney-spears-puts-the-wanted-in-the-corner/" target="_blank">another radio interview</a> in New York on Monday (their people should really consider keeping the boys off N.Y. radio, just sayin'), the lads opened up about a rather unpleasant interaction with Britney Spears' security team in November. </P><P> </P><P>They said they were personally invited to open Brit's show in Manchester and by all accounts the hook-up went swimmingly, with a cute photo op and a <a href="https://twitter.com/?tw_e=screenname&tw_i=131681568166129664&tw_p=tweetembed#!/britneyspears" target="_blank">follow-up tweet</a> from Spears in which she wrote, "So the boys from @thewantedmusic came to my Wembley show &amp; we hung out backstage! Love them!" </P><P> </P><P>But member Tom Parker revealed that, "We signed a confidentiality thing that we should never say anything about what happened, but let's tell it anyway." That prompted Siva Kaneswaran to open up the legal Pandora's box and spill, "I was in the hallway with me tour manager. Basically we were looking with a laptop, trying to get WiFi ... facing the middle of the hallway. [Britney's] bouncers came down with her and told us to face the wall." </P><P> </P><P>"As Miss Spears is walking through," added Parker. "We're like come on!" But, since they are nice boys, Kaneswaran said, "We turned around and I faced a wall for about 10 seconds until she got really far away." </P><P> </P><P>They didn't wait long to walk this one back a bit, though. Jay McGuiness quickly followed-up with another patented Wanted semi-apology, explaining, "But honestly when we actually met her person to person, she was so down to earth. You can tell she's a total Southern girl and Nathan [Sykes], when he was a kid, won a singing competition. She was one of the judges or something. And she gave him a kiss, it was one of his first kisses as a kid. So he got to meet her again and support her." </P><P> </P><P>Last week, when MTV News' Sway spoke to the boys they were in a similarly feisty mood, with Parker claiming that Justin Bieber had smacked Kaneswaran in his crown jewels when they performed with "Boyfriend" singer. "He [Kaneswaran] came up to me in the dressing room and said, 'Why's he picking on me?'" Parker joked. </P><P> </P><P>As for Spears, at the time, Sykes said, "She's lovely as well. We haven't really met people who aren't very nice and Britney was just very, very nice. She was kind of what you'd expect her to be, very happy and American." And, Parker said, even though her bodyguards were kind of scary, Britney, he said, had "lovely teeth." </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

Bobby Brown on Whitney Houston: "I'm Not the Reason She's Gone"

Bobby Brown was barely a part of Whitney Houston's life by the time she died, yet that hasn't shielded him from blame. Brown, who was married to Houston for 15 tumultuous years, is often rumored to have introduced her to drugs: the "bad boy" R&B star corrupting the angelic pop singer. However, in a new interview with Today, Brown adamantly denies that he was responsible for Houston's addictions.
