The Ontarion - Movie Review ? The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Tolkien classic entertains, but it?s no LOTR

I suppose I will come right out and say it: I didn?t like the first film installment of The Hobbit as directed by Peter Jackson.? Sure, it was entertaining, and it is a must-see for those who have either read the book by J.R.R. Tolkien or seen Jackson?s movie version of Tolkien?s Lord of the Rings series.? But disappointingly, it in no way compares to the masterpiece that was the Lord of the Rings series.

The special effects, for starters, are impressive ? but they feel a little more like showing off than truly adding to the cinematic experience.? Indeed, the use of computer-generated graphics is ubiquitous in this film.? That is to be expected these days, and with the state of the art now, it is not usually a problem.? It became a problem when Jackson insisted the film be shown in 48 frames per second instead of the standard 24.

The high frame rate is meant to create a clearer, more vibrant appearance. And that was accomplished, to unexpectedly disastrous effect.? It not only made the computer-generated components of the movie seem ? to me ? less realistic, it made the real components look so real that they appeared fake.? For instance, with much brighter grass and flowers, the same idyllic set of the Shire appeared starkly different than in the Lord of the Rings.

Throughout the entire film, the atmosphere is similarly distorted from its portrayal in the earlier film franchise.? Some might argue that this is a different (but related) storyline and therefore these drastic changes in the way the fictional world of Middle-Earth is portrayed are acceptable.? To that, I would counter that it conflicts with the ancient and misty history of a place that seems to be eternal: the aesthetic of the film ought to reflect the aesthetic of the tale.

What An Unexpected Journey has going for it is that it represents only the first of three parts of the original book. While no film adaptation of a book can truly capture the depth written into it, at least this one does not seek to chop out all the good bits.? In fact, it draws in elements from the numerous appendices and other writings of Tolkien, actually adding some depth.

PFT: Cowher plans eventual return to coaching

Vince WilforkAP

Patriots DT Vince Wilfork may make life miserable for Texans RB Arian Foster on Sunday.

People in Buffalo aren?t sure what to make of the decision to hire Doug Marrone.

Asked if he?s certain the franchise has the right people in place to build a winner, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said, ?How in life are you ever certain? I believe they have the talent to deliver day-in and day-out. But this is a business that?s really measured. It?s probably like no other business in the world. You measure it with wins and losses.?

The reviews are in for Tuesday?s Rex Ryan-Woody Johnson press conference, and the New York media was not impressed.

The Ravens say they don?t care about the fact that they?re underdogs against the Broncos.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is being compared to Susan Lucci.

Is the presence of QB Brandon Weeden a positive or a negative for potential head coaches of the Browns?

A Pittsburgh man was arrested for breaking into Heinz Field.

The Texans need to win the turnover battle in New England.

Said Colts QB Andrew Luck of the end of the season, ?It?s weird. You?ve been going 100 miles per hour for 20-something weeks. Now, you?re at zero miles per hour with nothing to do. It?s weird cleaning out your locker.?

Said Jaguars owner Shad Khan of new G.M. Dave Caldwell, ?We got our man. I have a lot of faith in David Caldwell, and I can assure our fans that the best days for the Jacksonville Jaguars are in front of us.?

Titans tight ends coach John Zernhelt, who had one year left on his contract, was fired on Tuesday after seven seasons with the team.

Broncos QB Peyton Manning says his neck injury affected his grip strength, which is why he now sometimes wears a glove on his throwing hand: ?I certainly don?t think I would have had to wear the glove had I not been injured last [season]. It?s part of my injury, some things that I?ve had to adjust.?

Here?s a look at some of the candidates to become the next general manager of the Chiefs.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen says he?s done talking about what the tema could have done differently last season.

An announcement on the Chargers? next general manager is expected to come today.

Firing defensive coordinator Rob Ryan could signal that Dallas plans a complete overhaul of its defensive scheme, which would have personnel implications as well.

Giants FB Henry Hynoski was named to the 2012 USA Football All-Fundamentals Team.

Says former Eagles coach Dick Vermeil of the team?s current coaching search, ?I think it?s an advantage for an NFL coach to be an offensive coach, he?s gotta answer all the questions anyway and 90% of them are going to be about the offense. More often than not, the conversation starts about the QB or the offense. So why not have somebody who?s the hood ornament of your organization have that as their strengths. I?m not saying it?s the only way or the right way, I just will always lean that way.?

DE Phillip Merling, a former No. 32 overall pick, is among the players signed to futures contracts by the Redskins.

Bears special teams coordinator Dave Toub is becoming an old pro at interviewing for head-coaching jobs.

Lions DE Ronnell Lewis was drafted last year with the idea that he?d be primarily a special teams contributor as a rookie, but in 2013 he may see plenty of playing time on defense.

Packers fans are everywhere, including at a bar in Paris.

The Vikings have some decisions to make about 36-year-old CB Antoine Winfield, who?s due $7.2 million in 2013, and 33-year-old DT Kevin Williams, who?s due $8 million.

Although it?s technically a sellout, there are about 9,000 tickets available, starting at $60, for Sunday?s Falcons game.

The Panthers have now finished 7-9 seven times in franchise history.

The New Orleans media gave Saints RT Zach Strief the annual Good Guy Award.

The Bucs may need to diversify their play calling.

New Cardinals G.M. Steve Kleim believes in drafting a quarterback every year.

Rams QB Sam Bradford had a C-plus season.

San Francisco LB Patrick Willis says he can accept it if he doesn?t get a lot of playing time because the 49ers need to use their nickel and dime packages against the Packers.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says he likes the fact that his team won?t back down to anyone.

(AP) ? Lionel Messi became the first four-time winner of the FIFA Player of the Year award after shattering the world record with 91 goals last year for Barcelona and Argentina.

The 25-year-old won for the fourth straight time, beating Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta in voting announced Monday. His 91 goals topped Gerd Mueller's mark of 85 for Bayern Munich and Germany in 1972.

Abby Wambach became the first American to win FIFA Women's Player of the Year since Mia Hamm in 2001 and 2002. Pia Sundhage was voted top women's coach after leading Wambach and the U.S. team to the gold medal at last summer's London Olympics.

Messi received 41.60 percent of the points in votes by national team coaches and captains plus selected media. Ronaldo got 23.68 percent and Iniesta 10.91 percent.

"To tell the truth, this is really unbelievable to get the fourth award. I am so nervous," Messi said in Spanish, wearing a black tuxedo jacket and bow tie, both with a white polka-dot pattern in an unexpectedly flamboyant touch.

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann and captain Carlos Bocanegra both voted Messi first, as did Soccer America's Paul Kennedy.

"Whether I win or not it doesn't matter, it's a privilege to be here," Ronaldo, the 2008 winner, said at a pre-gala news conference he attended while wearing a New York Yankees cap.

Zinedine Zidane of France and Ronaldo of Brazil were voted FIFA Player of the Year three times before the award merged in 2010 with France Football's Golden Ball, given to the European player of the year. The Golden Ball, or Ballon d'Or, was won three times by Michel Platini of France and Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten of the Netherlands.

The 32-year-old Wambach received 20.67 percent to edge teammate Alex Morgan (13.5) and five-time winner Marta of Brazil (10.87). Jill Ellis, who was interim U.S. coach last fall, voted Wambach first, as did Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl, while American captain Christie Rampone voted Morgan first.

"I'm very, very surprised," Wambach said. "Not only do I think Marta and Alex could have won, but many other players could have been here as well."

Wambach, who received the award from American goalkeeper Hope Solo, scored five goals in London as the U.S. won its third straight Olympic title. She has 152 international goals, six shy of Hamm's record.

"She's so completely deserving of this award," Morgan said. "She's made such a huge mark on women's soccer over the past decade. She's an inspiration to not only the thousands of young girls around the country and world, but also to me."

The U.S. players were serenaded from the stage by Sundhage, who sang a verse of the Bob Dylan song "If Not For You" when she received her award.

Sundhage, who left the U.S. job after the Olympics to coach her native Sweden, got 28.59 percent of the vote to defeat Nono Sasaki of Japan (23.83) and Bruno Bini of France (9.02).

Vicente del Bosque was voted top men's coach after leading Spain to its third straight title in a major tournament, the 2012 European Championship. Del Bosque got 34.51 percent to win over Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho (20.49), who won last year, and Pep Guardiola (12.91) who won in 2011 and retired from Barcelona last spring.

The three men's Player of the Year were on the World XI All-Star team chosen by the FIFPro group of players' unions, comprising 50,000 members worldwide.

They selected a team composed entirely of players from Spanish clubs, with nine repeating their selection from one year ago.

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas was selected as goalkeeper, joined on defense by teammates Sergio Ramos and Marcelo and by Barcelona's Dani Alves and Gerard Pique. Iniesta was joined in midfield by Barcelona teammate Xavi Hernandez and Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso. Messi led the attack with Ronaldo and Atletico Madrid's Radamel Falcao. Marcelo and Falcao replaced Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney from the 2011 team.

The Puskas Award for the best goal in 2012, voted on by fans, was won by Miroslav Stoch of Fenerbahce, who had a long-range volley last March in a Turkish league game against Genclerbirligi.

Uzbekistan won the fair play award for its good disciplinary record. Sepp Blatter made the FIFA presidential award to Franz Beckenbauer, who captained and coached West Germany to World Cup victories, and then led the local organizing committee of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Keeping to your New Year resolutions with PiFace

Jan. 8, 2013 ? After a festive period of excess, a January diet is one of the most common New Year resolutions for many people.

Sticking to it, however, is harder, with temptation around every corner and inside every cupboard.

Now University of Manchester scientists have come up with a unique deterrent -- a talking, tweeting chicken guarding your cupboards to shame hungry dieters into abstaining.

The chicken, which not only barks out orders to sneaky snackers, but even tweets that person's Twitter account to publicly shame them if they stray, uses a Raspberry Pi -- a tiny, single-board computer.

Raspberry Pi and PiFace, an add-on which powers real-life applications, are the simplest and most user-friendly ways for computers to interface with the world, and are being used by University of Manchester scientists to inspire the next generation of computer whizzkids.

The credit-card sized computers have a vast range of potential applications that will get young people fired up for computing. As well as the cupboard watcher, The University has helped youngsters make birdboxes that tweet and photograph birds, control Scalextric cars and build interactive toys that react to the weather. London Zoo is also interested in collaborating to record animal movements.

The academics, from the University's School of Computer Science, have run a series of workshops for schoolteachers aiming to transform the teaching of computing in schools.

Raspberry Pi and PiFace put the fun back into computing and academics hope to be a major influence on changing the way the schools and society view the subject.

Academics have found that schoolchildren coming into University have a much lower level of technical knowledge than in previous years. The Government is keen on improving how computing is taught in schools using a scientific approach to the subject.

Raspberry Pi was developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the aim of improving teaching of basic computer science in schools.

PiFace devices sit on top of the Raspberry Pi to control the real world -- powering motors, controlling robots, triggering cameras and using sensor networks. With the Pi they have all the capabilities of a computer but are more flexible and can be embedded in the real world -- costing as little as ?40 per kit.

Dr David Rydeheard, from the School of Computer Science, said: "This is an exciting development, taking computing out of its box and allowing schoolchildren to play with the science of computing.

"Schools have physics, chemistry and biology laboratories to teach these subjects. The combination of Raspberry Pi and PiFace creates a cheap personal laboratory for computer science that every child can own.

"The future wealth of our country depends crucially on our expertise in the science and technology of computing. At the moment schools fail to teach their students computing: how to design and build computing systems. Raspberry Pi and PiFace are ideal for schools to use to teach this key subject."

Workshops for teachers using Raspberry Pi and PiFace have attracted more than 50 teachers from schools in the North West per session, and more recently The University has run workshops with children.

Dr Andrew Robinson was amazed by the response of children. He said: "It really fired their imagination.

"After seeing what Raspberry Pi and PiFace could do we had suggestions including an automated insulin monitor that can dial 999, and another that automatically reorders food when it detects the cupboard is bare.

"One child even came up with a design for a device that politely reminds you to put the toilet seat down after use. I was really blown away with what they came up with."

The team are also launching the Raspberry Pi Bake Off, an international competition for schools and hobbyists, challenging entrants to create useful gadgets to change the world using Raspberry Pi computers.

A video of children using PiFace with the Scalextric and birdbox during the Manchester Science Festival can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjME3WU7ao0

Court asks govt to return prime land acquired 52 ... - Real Estate India

??|?? January 7, 2013 ?? 02:42pm ??|Contributed by manoja

CHENNAI: The Madras high court asked the Tamil Nadu government to re-convey a piece of land opposite the Raj Bhavan ? measuring 1.62 acres and worth at least 150 crore ? 52 years after it was acquired for a public purpose.

Justice K N Basha, passing an order on the writ petition of five legal heirs of the land owners, directed the government to hand over the land in 12 weeks after receiving the original compensation amount. The government, however, has preferred a review petition and it is pending.

It was in August 1960 that the state government initiated the acquisition of the property on Sardar Patel Road for a public purpose of constructing a hostel and buildings for the Central Cooperative Institute. The land?s original owners ? Manali Ramakrishna Mudaliar and Manali Parthasarathy Mudaliar ? received a compensation of 33,947. The two died in May 1999 and April 2002, respectively.

In 2006, their five legal heirs filed a writ petition asking for the re-conveyance of the property, as the lands had not been utilised for the purpose for which it had been acquired. It was after filing of the writ petition that the government came to know about the property, and realised that it had somehow fallen into the hands of the highways department and that an association of highway department engineers too had been occupying the lands.

Though the high court asked the government to consider the representation of the legal heirs, it was rejected in 2007, on the ground that the property was under possession of the government for more than 40 years. After another round of litigation, the government gave them a hearing and passed a fresh order in 2008 holding that the acquired lands could not be used due to financial constraints and that steps had been taken to retrieve it from the highways department.

While Syed Mustafa, counsel for the heirs, said the land had not been used for the original purpose for 47 years and that it had been encroached, additional advocate-general S Gomathynayagam said the writ by legal heirs could not be maintained as the original owners had received the compensation.

Justice Basha, holding that the legal heirs could seek re-conveyance of the lands under Section 48-B of the Land Acquisition Act, said: ?The subject land has not been utilized for the specific purpose for which it was acquired. The cooperative department and the Chennai district collector have not raised their little finger by taking any action to utilize the land for any other public purpose, at least. It is to be reiterated that only in 2006, that too after the petitioners filed the petition, the Mambalam-Guindy tahsildar suddenly woke up and inspected the land and found pucca buildings erected by the Association of Highways Engineers and the highways department. The authorities have not produced any material or any scrap of document to show as to how the said land was occupied by the highways department.?

The state government acquired the land in 1960 on Sardar Patel Road for a public purpose of constructing a hostel and buildings for the Central Cooperative Institute.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) ? Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers showed how dangerous they can be when they're at full strength Saturday night, overwhelming the Minnesota Vikings 24-10 in an NFC wild-card game that was never really close.

John Kuhn scored two touchdowns, DuJuan Harris added another and Rodgers connected with an NFL playoff-record 10 receivers as he threw for 274 yards. Defensively, the Packers (12-5) finally managed to contain Adrian Peterson and were all over Vikings backup Joe Webb, pressed into service because of Christian Ponder's elbow injury.

Peterson was held to 99 yards ? an improvement after gaining 199 and 210 in the first two games. Webb, who hadn't thrown a pass all season, was sacked three times and off target all night. His only highlight was a 50-yard scoring pass to Michael Jenkins late in the fourth quarter.

Equality in Relationships: Non-Violence Wheel | We are All in This ...

I have been thinking a lot about what Domestic Violence issue I wanted to blog about.? I have wrote a few blogs in the past, but I wanted to write a post on Equality.? There are two different domestic violence wheels, one is the violence wheel and the other is the non-violence wheel.

If your relationship is not centered on Equality, you may way to consider getting out of the relationship (if you can safely), or talking to someone about what steps you can take. The history of the wheels can be found at: http://www.theduluthmodel.org/.? The wheel refers to "her" but men can be abused and be in a relationship that is not one of equality as well.? The violence wheel, as you probably imagined, is the opposite of this wheel.

Many people stay in? relationship thinking it will get better.? Many times, the best time of a relationship are at the beginning, and things will escalate from their if their is abuse.? Remember, abuse is about power.? The act of gaining power is constantly changing by the abuser.?

(AP) ? U.S. Sen. Michael Crapo pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of driving while intoxicated and then apologized for his actions and asked forgiveness from his constituents.

The Idaho Republican said nothing during a brief appearance in Alexandria General District Court, where he pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor and was ordered to pay a $250 fine and complete an alcohol safety program. He also agreed to a 12-month suspension of his driver's license. The sentence is typical for first-time drunken-driving offenders in Virginia.

Outside of court and in a subsequent conference call with reporters in his home state, Crapo apologized and said he'd been drinking alcohol a few nights a week, in violation of the tenets of his Mormon faith.

Crapo said he tried alcohol for the first time about a year ago, though he couldn't remember the details. It was a misguided attempt to relieve stress, he said, and he always kept his use of alcohol hidden, drinking alone in his Washington, D.C., apartment. The night of his arrest was the first time he had driven drunk, Crapo said.

"I was already thinking in my own mind that this had to end," Crapo said. "I believe in my heart that I had already recognized that I was on a bad path and I needed to find a different path to follow."

Crapo said he drank "several, probably two to three" vodka tonics at his Washington home on the night of Dec. 22 when he became restless, couldn't sleep and went out for a drive. It wasn't until he'd already been driving for about 30 minutes that he realized he was in no condition to drive and started to return home, he said. He ran a red light and was pulled over in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, in the early morning hours of Dec. 23.

Crapo failed a field sobriety test and registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent after his arrest, police said, above the legal limit of 0.08. No mention of his blood-alcohol level was made in court Friday, but a second test performed after Crapo was brought to the jailhouse registered at 0.14 percent, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the arrest. The official wasn't authorized to release information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"I am grateful, truly grateful, that no one was injured," Crapo said.

Crapo said he was not with anyone at the time, and was not coming or going from seeing anybody. He was discouraged because a late night of Senate work on a Friday caused him to miss a flight home, forcing him to spend an extra day away from family. His next flight was scheduled for Sunday, the day of his arrest.

His arrest stunned colleagues and constituents alike, not only because of his squeaky-clean image but also because he had said he doesn't drink, in accordance with his church's practices.

Crapo said he regretted bringing shame to himself and his faith because of the arrest and he would take the appropriate measures for forgiveness and repentance in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"I'm swearing off alcohol and I am not going to continue to drink," Crapo said. "I fully intend to continue to try to make a contribution in the United States Senate."

(AP) ? Six Russians were killed and two seriously injured when the snowmobile and sled they were riding veered off an Italian Alpine ski slope at night, slammed into a barrier and flew through the air into a ravine.

The accident occurred Friday night and when rescuers arrived at the scene six of the victims were found dead on the slope of Mount Cermis, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northeast Italy, said Cavalese Fire Department Cmdr. Roberto Marchi.

"It is clear that the fundamental cause is recklessness and imprudence," Marchi told Sky TG24 TV in an interview on the slope Saturday. It is labeled "pista nera" or black ski run, indicating a level of steepness and other difficult conditions suitable only for the most experienced skiers.

Six of the people involved in the accident were Russian tourists and the other two were Russians who worked in Italy in the tourist industry.

Cavalese Mayor Silvano Welponer said that putting a driver and passenger in the snowmobile and having it pull six passengers in the sled "made for a very heavy load. You have to know what you are doing and have the experience" to safely handle that, he said.

The ANSA news agency said authorities were performing tests to determine if the snowmobile's driver ? who survived the crash ? was drunk.

The sled-towing snowmobile cut a spectacular trajectory after it veered off the slope on a curve, hit the manmade barrier, flew through the air while shearing the tips off tree branches, then landed in the ravine, Italian news reports said.

RAI state radio said the slope was unlit, and other Italian news reports quoted local officials as saying it had been closed for the day and that the only vehicles allowed on it when it is open are staff or rescue ones. The Russians were believed to have dined at the top of the slopes and were heading back to their hotel when they crashed, the reports said.

The Russian consul general in Milan, Alexei Parmonov, said on Russian state television that he was in contact with Italian investigators, who he said suspect the crash was caused by excessive speed. They also were checking the possibility of a mechanical malfunction.

Italian prosecutors formally opened a probe to see if manslaughter charges should be filed, Italian news reports said.

Parmonov identified the four men and two women who died in the crash. Five of them and also one of the injured men were tourists from Krasnodar, a region in southern Russia that includes Sochi, which is preparing to hold the 2014 Winter Olympics. One of the dead women and the other injured man worked in Italy in the tourist industry.

The Russian diplomat identified the dead as Denis Kravchenko, Irina Kravchenko, Vyacheslav Sleptsov, Yulia Yudina, Lyudmila Yudina and Rafilya Pshenichnaya. The injured, he said, were Boris Yudin and Azat Agafarov. All except Pshenichnaya and Agafarov were tourists from Krasnodar. Yudin's 17-year-old son, who stayed behind in the hotel, lost his mother and sister in the accident, while his father was hospitalized with multiple fractures, Parmonov said.

A day of entertainment had been planned for the Val di Fiemme ski resort area Saturday, ahead of World Cup cross-country ski competition, but the festivities were canceled because of the accident.

Mount Cermis suffered two deadly accidents in the past.

In 1998, a U.S. Marine jet, flying low on a training run from a nearby air base, accidently sliced a ski gondola's cable, sending the cable car crashing to the ground and claiming 20 lives. The accident triggered months of tensions between Italy and the United States, two traditional good allies.

In 1976, a ski gondola broke off from its cable and plunged to the slope, killing 42 persons.

Pacino says he didn't want to meet Spector

(AP) ? Al Pacino said Friday that he decided not to meet famed record producer and convicted killer Phil Spector before portraying him in an HBO movie ? only to find he already had.

A friend showed Pacino a 20-year-old photo in which the actor was standing next to Spector. Pacino said he has no memory of the moment.

The movie, "Phil Spector," debuts in March. It focuses on the client-attorney relationship between Spector and Linda Kenney Baden, who represented him in his first trial after he was charged with the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. That ended in a mistrial, but Spector was convicted in a second trial and is now serving 19 years to life in prison.

Pacino wore a dizzying array of wigs in his portrayal of the eccentric Spector, whose "Wall of Sound" style was an integral part of pop music in the early 1960s. The actor said he decided not to meet Spector in prison because he'd be a different man than the one Pacino is portraying, who had not yet been convicted of a crime.

He watched video clips of Spector to help him with his portrayal.

"I didn't know anything about him, except that he was responsible for a lot of great music and this strange case," Pacino said.

Actress Helen Mirren, who portrayed Baden, said she heard stories about Spector from her filmmaker husband, Taylor Hackford, who had hired Spector to provide music for his 1980 film, "The Idolmaker."

The Academy Award-winning Mirren was a last-minute substitute in her role. Bette Midler had begun filming as Baden, but had to withdraw because of a bad back. The film's executive producers are Barry Levinson and David Mamet.

Trading And Investing Nova Copper And A Post Script On Precious ...

Disclosure: I am long ABX. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. I own shares in Nova Copper and Barrick Gold (More...)

Nova Copper (NCQ) is an amazing story that starts with two incredibly rich properties, Donlin Creek and the Ambler District west of Fairbanks, Alaska. There is a lengthy permitting process underway but the geological findings indicate that this penny stock will grow to a muscular mid cap and become a major world mining site. It offers lessons and opportunities for both trading and investing but first one must meet the cast of characters.

You can't understand Nova Copper without understanding Nova Gold (NG) an ailing mid-cap contrarian play, and you can't understand Nova Gold without knowing its fractious relationship with precious metals giant Barrick Gold Corp (ABX) that has been scaling back its exploration and slowing its development of nascent assets. The edgy, relations of Nova Gold to Barrick involve the latter's acquisition of Premier Metals and its neighboring properties. Dr. Thomas Kaplan, CEO of the Electrum Strategic Resources LLC which owns 27% (51 million shares) of NCQ also is Chairman of the Board of Nova Gold on which sits Dr. Marc Faber. Lastly the attention and purchases of Seth Klarman of Baupost and John Paulson of Paulson and Company who has about 30% of his $13 billion portfolio into Spider Gold ETF (GLD) and another 8% into Anglogold Ashanti Ltd (AU).

Nova Copper is a spin-off of Nova Gold , both of them favorites of Baupost. By the end of the 3rd quarter Klarman had upped his holding of NCQ to more than five million shares and 10.73% ownership. Paulson's holds 12.9% of the promising fledgling. As noted above, Electrum Strategic Resources with its many resource development affiliates, some in concert with Newmont Mining (NEM) is a major player. It takes a valuable asset to attract a brotherhood like this. This should be worth a 12-part TV series.

As was reported in SA early in August, more than six years ago Barrick offered to buy Nova Gold outright. The latter's ownership didn't like the tender so Barrick bought small cap Pioneer Metals with adjoining property. This is how they play ball on the piers of Manhattan.

Byron King has scrutinized Nova Copper's Donlin Creek and Ambler District samples and is impressed, devoting several pages of sample analysis, maps and projections in a special report in spring 2012. NCQ projects to 1.5 million oz of gold/year for twenty-seven years at a cost of $409/oz. The life of mine and low cost of NCQ compare very favorably to some of the best of the precious metal companies like Gold Corp (GG), Barrick, Kinross Gold Corp (KGC) and mid-cap AuRico Gold Inc (AUQ). Technical innovations are almost certain to extend the already extensive production curve as well as uncover additional ores. Nova Copper will produce gold, silver, very high purity copper, cobalt, lead and zinc.

NCQ began trading in late April 2012, just in time for the May plunge in precious metals echoed by the lows (for some companies, double bottom) of late July. Its range in just eight months began at $4.67 hit $1.65/share early in August and since then has been a markedly volatile micro-cap whose development phase is still a few years off. This reflects the exceptional richness of its properties and the interest this potential has drawn from major investors whose affiliations include industry majors like Barrick and Newmont. The EPA also can painfully protract the process when their care might be employed better at behemoth rare earth sites like Baotou in China's province of Inner Mongolia.

The complexity and intensity of interest presents an occasion for both solid investing and periodic trading and profit-taking. For more than four months, Nova Copper has been see-sawing between $3 and $1.75/share. It cratered after the election and has been near $2/share since then. At some point the upper range will move out of penny stock neighborhood but because getting permits let alone development and production will take years the higher highs and lower lows will take a while to become a fact of its trading life. That gives us a takeaway:

If you do not own this prize yet, by all means establish a position when the share price is below $2 (NCQ was at $2.04 after hours on Thursday, January 3; on Friday the 4th it traded between $1.97 and 2.05. Like many equities it has been jumpy on the 'fiscal cliff' the clich?d reporting on which mask basic differences about fiscal and socio-economic policies and the latest Fed minutes suggesting that its massive bond purchases and electronic printing may, repeat, may cease late in 2013. But as the world turns or seethes these days that's not a promise to bank. Still there's a lesson here.

When Nova Copper dips below $1.90 (having watched it closely, it can be expected to touch $1.80 or less a few more times before permanent ascension sets in), load up. If it suits your needs or taste, when it passes $2.60 trim a bit and take some profit but by no means liquidate your position. Keep an eye on the charts for the onset of the higher lows and higher highs that will arrive at some point, depending on how severe a correction occurs when the nitty gritty of deficit reduction gets banged out. As spring approaches there is likely to be significant volatility so my previous column's suggestion about a 10% minimum cash position holds.

The Fed's latest guidance and the immediate drop in precious metal holdings merit an afterword on their role in portfolio allocation and mid to long term value. There were steep sell-offs on the announcement as futures contracts for gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper and other commodities sagged on the strengthening dollar and ICE index. Is it a time to buy? Several experienced analysts, notably the venerable Richard Russell have argued that given the economic fundamentals and fiscal policies of the major central banks, gold should be 33 - 50% of a portfolio. Most people, I suggested and suggest cannot afford that weighting given that fundamentals and reason yield to sentiment and perhaps even more, manipulation of markets. Silver is a perfect example of the conjoined effects of sentiment and manipulation. A metal with many and diverse uses, -- currency, jewelry, silverware, electronics, photovoltaic's and more should make for a rather steady, sober market. The opposite is true: silver's hyper-volatility relative to gold is well known. Proponents of Elliott Wave theory have suggested that if silver breaks below $27.75/oz it may descend to $22 before resuming its strong bull run. The action January 3-4 gave credence to this analysis.

Given the power and variety of major macro-economic and political variables, it would be wise for those not in the '1%' neighborhood to keep exposure to precious metal miners and bullion in the 10-15% allocation range. The price should go much higher for the metals. Informed, experienced and successful Jim Sinclair has been calling for $3500 minimum for some time; many analysts have suggested gold at $10,000/oz in part because such a re-valuation would eliminate most of the national debt and restore major currencies to sanity. It makes sense but the policy goals of the inner ring of power long have planned a period of intense currency instability to prepare for a global currency, "call it the Phoenix" a prestigious and prescient journal wrote in January 1988. Despite the logic for a major increase in precious metal prices, given current shakiness, volatility and the long-term governing agenda, those who cannot hold out till a trend reversal might want to look for high days to reduce an allocation close to 10%. There will be ample occasion to add back and increase. Moreover, central banks are continuing to acquire large amounts of gold and it is plausible that whatever currency or currencies are left standing after this strange and terrible end of the floating fiat era will be backed by significant gold reserves. That should support higher gold and silver prices.

No matter how the macro climate develops in the near and mid-term take advantage of the volatility to build a healthy position in Nova Copper. It's a winner in its intrinsic qualities and because of the intense interest of major investors and producers.

For now, happy are they who consulted Seeking Alpha and bought into Turquoise Hill (TRQ) near its recent bottom at $7.10.

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Buy A ...

Real estate shopping can be exciting and difficult. If you are not equipped with the right information, you face the possibility of making mistakes that could haunt you for many years. Read below to find out how to avoid these pitfalls in real estate buying.

If you are seeking better returns on any real estate investments, think about getting some repairs and remodeling done. This way, you can have an investment return quickly, because the value of your property will go up. In some cases, the increase in property value is greater than the amount of money that you invested into the work.

Make sure to contact people you helped to buy a house every holiday, and on anniversaries of their first day in the house. If you call them again, they will know how much help you were when they were buying their home. Kindly remind them that you make your income via referrals and that you would feel honored if they spread your name to friends.

TIP! Buying commercial property can be easier if you have a partner that you can trust. It can make it way easier to get the loan you need.

If you have already been approved for a loan, it may entice sellers a little more. You might only end up prolonging the process of buying without pre-approval.

Before you meet with a real estate agent, think about questions you want to ask them. The content of your questions should cover every aspect you can think of. Things you want to include are asking the number of homes they sold over a specific time period and of those home, the number that were within the geographic location you are concerned about. A reputable agent will be ready to respond to all of your questions thoroughly and professionally.

Make sure to look towards the future whenever you are in the market for a new house. If you plan on living in the home you purchase, then you might want to view the nearby schools even if you do not have kids. You might want them someday, and it?s better to be safe than sorry.

TIP! Go online and search the sex offender registry in the area of any home you are thinking about buying. A real estate agent is not obligated to let you know if there is a sex offender living next door, or anywhere in the neighborhood.

Research a rental property thoroughly before buying it. If you want to buy some rental property, do not buy it until you have looked at the rental records for two years. The reason for this is that you have to make sure that the seller has made full and accurate disclosure regarding the property?s potential for income. Additionally, the lender will probably also want this crucial cash flow information before they sign off on the loan.

If you plan to purchase a house that has a nice view, don?t base your purchase solely on that fact. Even though the view is certainly lovely, it might not appeal to as many potential buyers in the future as you hoped it would. Pay for the home and view you love, but don?t pay too much.

TIP! Make your dream home your reality. Some investors say that it isn?t a good time for buying or selling larger houses, but some disagree.

A good real estate agent is an advantage. You can find information about the real estate agent by checking with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and also through good sources on the Internet. Good references often come from people you know: friends, co-workers, and family.

If your future rental property has a garden, discuss with your landlord about who has the maintenance responsibilities before you sign the lease. Some rentals require the tenant to perform yard duties. Many places have this task included into the monthly payments.

Be sure to save up the down payment your mortgage loan servicing company requires. If you aren?t able to make the minimum down payment, you?ll be facing charges for private mortgage insurance, or PMI. This can add quite a bit of extra money that you would have to pay on a monthly basis to show the bank that you are able to make payments on your mortgage.

TIP! When buying a house, make sure you understand your options when it comes to the term of your loan. It is essential that you know exactly how much you will be paying every month and what the total cost of the loan over the entire length of the mortgage will amount to.

Figure out the amount of money you can spend on a house by utilizing an online calculator. They will ask for information related to your income and expenses. The tool then gives you a price range that ensures you will be able to afford the loan without tightening your belt or signing onto something crazy.

Get an agent or a broker to help you if you want to invest in property. You will have access to more resources through these people. Many brokers will use special software to sort through MLS and other listing services. You can personally do a property search through MLS, but these tools speed up the process and will help find properties which you might have missed otherwise.

Before you begin house hunting, examine your credit report. After you obtain a copy of your history, carefully look through it and report any issues that you see. Your aim is to have your credit in a position where you can go forward with a home purchase, as this will increase your ability to sustain a mortgage.

TIP! When you are buying a new property, you need to have some liquid funds available for unexpected expenses. The closing costs are usually calculated by adding the prorated taxes, bank points and down payment.

This is a great time to think of investing in property. Property values and interest rates are low in light of the recent housing market crash. If you?ve always dreamed of owning a home, now is the time to buy. Since the prices will eventually go up again, if you purchase now, you are sure to make your investment profitable.

Always have a potential home thoroughly inspected before purchasing it. While it will cost you, don?t have a friend or relative do it, since something can be missed and you?re left with no recourse.

Prior to making the final decision to purchase a particular home, you should thoroughly research the neighborhood that it is located in. You will never be truly happy with your home if the neighborhood is not what you desire. You have to know all you can about the area you plan to move to in order to know what to expect if you live there.

TIP! A simple method in starting your process in real estate buying is to get organized. Organize your information in a notebook.

These tips may help you make better decisions. Put them to work, so that you do not end up wasting your money. You will feel more confident about your decisions if you are sure of yourself.

Best Online Website Promotion ? Dedicated Servers

Sharing knowledge on the web can be a very powerful way to establish your online presence and credibility. First, you write a thoughtful and informative article on an topic in your area of expertise. Then you submit it to e-zines to be read by the general public and possibly re-published on other web sites. Appended to the end of your article is a resource box containing a brief promotional message linking to your web site. Webmasters who wish to reprint your article on their sites are required to include your resource box along with any live links to your site. The benefit that you get from your article is two-fold. First, your article will be read by visitors to the e-zine site. If they find it helpful and interesting, they will likely visit your web site to see what else you had to offer. Second, webmasters who find your article useful to their visitors may re-publish it on their sites, giving your article additional exposure. Every time your article is re-published on a web site, you gain an additional one-way link to your site through the live link in your resource box. This adds to your link popularity and ultimately increases your search engine rankings.  As you can see, the true potential of your article lies in its ability to propagate virally in cyberspace. For your article to propagate virally, it should appeal to both readers and webmasters alike. Keep in mind that your goal is hold your readers attention long enough for them to get to the  resource box.  If your article is boring and uninformative, few people will read it beyond the first or second paragraph. Below are some pointers to consider when writing an article: 1. Give your article a catchy title. Your title is the first and often the only thing that visitors see when they skim through a list of articles on an e-zine page. Put some thought into coming up with a title that grabs the reader?s attention right away. Words like Secrets,Free, and Successful tend to attract more attention than others. 2. Your article should not read like an ad. Most people read articles to find information they can use, not to see a pitch about your products or services.  If they see your article as nothing more than a shameless act of self promotion, they?ll get turned off and hit the Back button right away.  Put yourself in the reader?s shoes. What benefits do you want to get out of reading an article?  Cater to your reader?s  interests rather than your own. 3. Offer lots of free, useful information. Following on the last tip, keep in mind that your readers are looking for specific how-to instructions to help them achieve a certain goal.  Offer lots of tangible information that is immediately useful to them. Do not lead them through hoops just to get to an order 4) Avoid gimmicks. While it may be true that a sucker is born every minute, most internet users are sophisticated enough to tell what?s legitimate and what?s not. Write with the intention of offering something substantial to the reader. Be honest and forthright. Your article should not cause the reader to think, What is this guy trying to sell me? 5) Be succinct. Get to the point quickly, preferably in the first or second paragraph. Avoid lengthy paragraphs. Use lots of white space to separate your paragraphs to make them easier to read. 6) Your article should not be too short. Certainly, it?s possible to write a good article packed with useful information using just a couple hundred words. If your article is too short, however, some webmasters may feel hesitant to reprint it on their sites. They may, instead, borrow your ideas and write their own articles, gaining authorship without having to give you credit for your ideas. How long should your article be?  I suggest at least 500 words, preferably longer.  Longer articles give webmasters the impression that you have put some time and effort into your work and, thus, are deserving of being reprinted on their sites. 7) Use live (clickable) links in your resource box. Many e-zines permit clickable links in  resource boxes. Yet, many authors forgo this privilege by simply spelling out their URLs. Whenever permitted, you should spell out your URL as well as make it clickable (e.g. http://www.nexcomp.com/weblaunch). The advantages of a clickable URL are, (1) readers can go to your site simply by clicking on it,  and more importantly, (2) search engines will be able to record the ezine page containing your article as a link your web site, adding to your link popularity and search engine rankings. 8) Avoid hyping in your resource box. Your resource box, while promotional in nature, should be brief and tasteful. The purpose of your resource box is not to sell your readers something, but to lead them to your website which does the actual selling. Your resource box should contain your name, your company name, a brief description of your products or services, your web site?s URL, and a clickable link to your site. 9) Put some thought and effort into your writing. E-zines have varying standards for accepting articles, and some accept and publish all submissions without any human review at all. However, this does not mean you should write an article just for sake of having it published somewhere. If your article comes off as half-baked, readers may make a similar assumption about you and your business practices. 10) Submit your article to as many e-zines as feasible. There are dozens of e-zines on the web that welcome submissions from independent authors.

Is Hillary Clinton Battling Brain Cancer? | RumorFix

Posted on January 2nd, 2013 at 6:18 am

Fixed

The National Enquirer published a nasty rumor regarding Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, claiming that the former First Lady is suffering from brain cancer.

Last month, Clinton experienced a concussion after collapsing in her home. She was then checked into a hospital this past weekend after a checkup revealed that she had developed a blood clot from the concussion.

Despite doctors claims that Clinton would make a full recovery, National Enquirer?s brain cancer rumor gained more momentum. Fortunately, a spokesperson for the Secretary of State has dismissed the rumor, calling it ?nonsense?.

CIBC to pay $149.5 million to Lehman estate, ending dispute

(Reuters) - Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce said it would pay $149.5 million to the estate of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc to resolve litigation over a collateralized debt obligation tied to the bankruptcy of the former Wall Street bank.

In a statement on Monday, Canada's fifth-largest bank said the million payment was equal to $110.3 million after taxes.

CIBC said it had previously recognized a gain of $841 million following Lehman's September 15, 2008, bankruptcy, when it had reduced to zero its financial commitment related to a note issued by the CDO.

On September 14, 2010, Lehman had sued CIBC and dozens of other defendants to recover more than $3 billion that it said it had been deprived of as a result of the Chapter 11 filing.

Lehman contended it had contracts that gave it senior payment priority on various derivatives and collateralized debt obligations, but that the bankruptcy caused this to be improperly replaced with junior payment priority.

It sought to hold CIBC responsible for a large portion of the more than $1.3 billion due under an agreement requiring it to cover payment shortfalls tied to a CDO transaction.

A Lehman spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the CIBC settlement.

Once Wall Street's fourth-largest investment bank, Lehman emerged from bankruptcy protection on March 6 and has paid out roughly half of the estimated $65 billion it hopes to return to creditors. Its bankruptcy is by far the largest in U.S. history.

The case is Lehman Brothers Special Financing Inc v. Bank of America NA et al, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 10-ap-03547. The main bankruptcy is In re: Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc in the same court, No. 08-13555.
