FREMONT -- The California Energy Commission voted this week to grant $10 million to Tesla Motors, Inc., to help produce an electric-powered vehicle at its Fremont plant.
The project is expected to create more than 500 new manufacturing jobs at the plant, said Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont.
"This is great news for Tesla and great news for the Fremont community," he said. "Not only will it lead to cleaner vehicles improving our environment, it also will lead to more manufacturing jobs here at home."
Tesla plans to spend about $50 million to manufacture the Model X, an electric-powered SUV expected to travel 250 miles on a single charge.
The California Energy Commission, the state's main energy policy and planning agency, has invested more than $20 million in electric-vehicle infrastructure, including the development of 5,000 charging stations statewide, Wieckowski said.
